About the position

This position is responsible for writing compelling content for music technology PR clients. Written content includes but is not limited to press releases, blog posts, company overviews, executive bios, and hiring announcements. The writer conducts interviews with clients to prepare written pieces.  The position will be assigned to write for 10-15 clients. However, the writer may be asked to write additional pieces for other clients and projects as needed.  Under the supervision and mentorship of the Director of Strategy, the position will learn about and assist in developing PR strategy for client campaigns. This position will report to the Director of Strategy.

Duties and responsibilities

Client Interviews and Meetings (20%)

  • The writer is responsible for learning about the client to capture and convey appropriate tone and message.
  • The writer interviews appropriate person at music tech company to draw out interesting features of business and products, the personality of the CEO/founder, history of the company, and company’s relevance in the music technology industry.
  • Attend strategy meetings with the clients as needed to understand strategic direction of the PR campaign and to develop rapport with client.  Frequency of client meetings will vary based on news announcements and current writing projects.

Writing and Editing (approximately 65%)

  • Write compelling, impactful, and newsworthy press releases, announcements, blog posts and thought leadership pieces for music tech clients.  Writing should meet the RPS style of being intelligent yet accessible, identifying the most compelling part of the stories, and avoid hype.
  • Edit writing based upon client feedback.  Submit revisions in a timely manner.
  • Be available to publicists to provide feedback and editing on pitch writing as needed.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Strategy, learn and assist with the Crystallization discovery process, with the eventual goal of leading the process for clients.
  • Will be asked, on occasion, to review and edit the content of other writers.

Industry Research (10%)

  • Keep up-to-date with industry trends
  • Read relevant articles and share relevant information with the team.
  • Research information relevant to clients and industries.

Administrative (5%)

  •  Record Keeping – accurately record completion of written pieces in internal database
  • Save all completed drafts in client folders on the server.  Alert publicist when final press release is ready to pitch.
  • Attendance at staff meetings

Skills and qualifications

  • Applicants should be familiar with carrying out research on assigned topics and transforming that information into a cohesive piece for audience consumption. Writers should be comfortable with creating content based on assignment briefs and style guides. They should have proven experience delivering high quality work and keeping to deadlines. In addition, they should be able to take editorial feedback and use it to refine their work.
  • Ability to cull and convey the most significant musical, technical, business, cultural, and human-interest aspects of active projects.
  • Enthusiasm for and basic knowledge of music, technology, entrepreneurship, and business.
  • Willingness to keep up on best practices and emerging trends in publicity, public relations, music and technology.
  • Ability to think creatively.  Willingness to try new ideas.
  • Exceptional organizational, research, and time management skills, ability to manage multiple priorities, delegate, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain and groom strong and trusting relationships with clients.
  • Self-directed, assertive, with high levels of energy and initiative once assignments and goals are determined.
  • Technical proficiency in cloud-based document management, Google Suite, slack, network file-sharing.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years professional working experience which includes writing preferred.  Journalism, Media, Communications, English, Music Business, Arts Administration, Marketing graduates preferred.

Our office is located in Bloomington, IN.  This position may be hired as a fully remote position, with preference given to applicants within a drivable distance of Bloomington, IN for training and meetings.  While most of our work is done remotely through video conferencing and file sharing, we believe that in-person interactions are valuable for collaboration, development and team building.
